    Tusk reagiert auf Platinis Warnschuss


    Polens Premierminister Donald Tusk hat Verständnis für den Warnschuss von UEFA-Chef Michel Platini wegen der schleppenden Vorbereitungen der Fußball-EM 2012 in Polen und der Ukraine gezeigt. `Mit liegt der Report vor. Und ich muss sagen, dass ich darüber noch nicht einmal überrascht bin. Unnötigerweise wurde mehr als ein halbes Jahr verschwendet. Die Liste der Versäumnisse ist lang´, sagte Tusk in der polnischen Tageszeitung Dziennik. Der Regierungschef versprach der Europäischen Fußball-Union (UEFA) allerdings, dass Polen die Vorbereitungen unter seiner `persönlichen Verantwortung´ beschleunigen werde. `Noch ist nichts verloren´, sagte Tusk weiter und schob die Schuld für die Versäumnisse seinem Vorgänger Jaroslaw Kaczynski in die Schuhe. Tusk hatte Kaczynski erst im November 2007 als Premierminister abgelöst. Platini hatte am Mittwoch gesagt, er sei davon überzeugt, `dass die nächsten vier bis sechs Monate schwierig werden, wenn eine Verzögerung im Aufbau der sportlichen und öffentlichen Infrastruktur für die EM 2012 verhindert werden soll´. Platini appellierte an die beiden Ausrichterländer, das Tempo und die Qualität der Vorbereitung zu verbessern. Am Freitagnachmittag wollte Polens Sportminister Miroslaw Drzewiecki detaillierte Pläne zur Errichtung des Stadions in Warschau präsentieren. Drzewiecki zeigte sich allerdings unbeeindruckt von der Platini-Drohung. Der UEFA-Report zeige den Stand von Mitte November. `Vieles stimmt deshalb nicht mehr. Wir sind optimistisch und zuversichtlich, dass die Polen und die Ukrainer ihre Organisationsqualitäten beweisen werden´, meinte Drzwiecki.

    Commissioner announces Toronto plan for Bills

    BUFFALO, N.Y. -- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced plans Friday for the Buffalo Bills to play an annual regular-season game in Toronto, starting this year.
    The announcement came during Goodell's state of the league address during the Super Bowl festivities in Phoenix, and will make the Bills the NFL's first team to play annual regular-season games outside the United States.

    The Bills proposed the plan at the NFL owners meetings in October as part of their desire to expand their market to Toronto, Canada's largest city and financial capital, and located about a 90-minute drive from Buffalo.
    Under the team's proposal, the Bills would play some preseason games and one annual regular-season game at the downtown Rogers Centre -- a domed stadium with a retractable roof -- through 2012.
    A delegation of executives representing the Toronto Blue Jays and the Rogers Centre were scheduled to travel this week to meet with NFL officials at the Super Bowl.
    CFL commissioner Mark Cohon is on board with the NFL playing games in his territory.
    "I've been having good conversations with the league on this," Cohon told The Associated Press. Cohon, who is returning to Toronto after a brief vacation, added he'll wait to comment further until after Goodell makes his announcement.
    It's not clear who the Bills opponent would be or when the game would be played because the NFL schedule will not be released until spring.
    For the Bills, this is considered the small-market franchise's most ambitious attempt to secure its long-term future in Buffalo by tapping into Toronto's vast corporate base. The Bills, who count Toronto as part of their territory, attract an average of 15,000 Canadian fans to their home games, but have had little success establishing marketing deals and selling luxury suites with companies north of the border.
    Playing annual games there would give the franchise a more immediate presence in a region that has a population of about 4.6 million.
    NFL teams have played home games outside their community, but not to this international degree. The Packers previously split home games between Green Bay and Milwaukee, and the Chicago Bears played their 2002 home games at Champaign, Ill., because of renovations to Soldier Field.
    And Buffalo playing in Toronto goes beyond the NFL's recent bid to play games annually outside the United States, after Miami played the New York Giants at London's Wembley Stadium this past season.
    Goodell also announced Friday that San Diego and New Orleans will play each other in London next season.
    The Bills have already received state and county approval to play in Toronto. The approval was necessary because of the team's lease with Ralph Wilson Stadium.

    Phoenix, AZ - FedEx and the NFL Wednesday announced the winners of the fifth annual FEDEX AIR & GROUND NFL PLAYERS OF THE YEAR AWARD at a press conference in Arizona, site of Super Bowl XLII.

    *Quarterback BRETT FAVRE of the Green Bay Packers was named the FedEx Express NFL Player of the Year.

    *Running back FRED TAYLOR of the Jacksonville Jaguars was named the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Year.

    In honor of the winners' great play, FedEx will donate $25,000 to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Foundation and Wolfson Children's Hospital (Baptist), the local children's hospitals in each player's market. In addition, Phoenix Children's Hospital Foundation in Arizona will receive a $25,000 donation during the week of Super Bowl XLII.

    For the fourth season in a row, the Air & Ground program was a win for the local community. This season, the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week awards included $5,000 donations to the local children's hospital in the two winners' markets. That means that FedEx has delivered nearly $250,000 to local children's hospitals around the country in recognition of the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Program, bringing the four-season total to nearly $100,000.

    Favre led the Packers to a 13-3 record and to the number two seed in the NFC. Favre completed 66.5 percent of his passes (356 of 535) for 4,155 yards (fourth in the league), and threw 28 touchdown passes. In 2007, Favre passed John Elway (148) for the most wins by a quarterback with 160, passed Dan Marino (420) for most career touchdown passes with 442, and passed Marino (62) for the most career games with three-or-more touchdowns passes with 63 career games. Favre also eclipsed the all-time career passing yards mark set by Marino (61,361) with 61,655. His 82-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings against Denver on 10/29 was the second-longest overtime touchdown in NFL history, tying Tom Brady and Troy Brown on 10/19/03. Favre was nominated for six FedEx Express NFL Player of the Week awards in 2007, winning five times.

    Taylor led the Jaguars to an 11-5 record and the number five seed in the AFC by rushing for 1,202 yards (fifth in the AFC, ninth in the league) over only 223 carries (5.4 average) and scoring five touchdowns. Taylor helped the Jaguars finish strong by finishing his season with five 100+ yard games in Weeks 12 - 16, with one of his best performances coming at Pittsburgh rushing for 147 yards over 25 carries and scoring one touchdown to beat the Steelers 29 - 22. This year, Taylor became the 21st running back in history with 10,000 yards rushing (10,715). He also made nine receptions for 58 yards. Taylor was nominated for two FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week awards in 2007, winning once.

    Favre and Taylor were selected from among six finalists in air and ground categories. The other FedEx Express NFL Player of the Year finalists were New England Patriots quarterback TOM BRADY and Dallas Cowboys quarterback TONY ROMO. Minnesota Vikings running back ADRIAN PETERSON and San Diego Chargers running back LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON were finalists for FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Year.

    More than 1,000,000 fan votes were cast at NFL.com from Tuesday, January 8th through Wednesday, January 23th. After tabulating this season's fan voting the six finalists were chosen by a panel of NFL experts.

    Last year, New Orleans Saints QB DREW BREES and San Diego Chargers RB LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON were named the 2006 FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year. Bengals QB CARSON PALMER and Seattle Seahawks RB SHAUN ALEXANDER were named the 2005 FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year.
