    QB-Draft ist auch große Glückssache (siehe Brady), also muss man einfach aufs richtige Pferd setzen und die Daumen drücken.

    NFL considering earlier start to Giants-Redskins opener

    NEW YORK -- The NFL's Thursday night season opener will match the Super Bowl-champion New York Giants and the Washington Redskins, with the game possibly starting an hour-and-a-half earlier to avoid clashing with the Republican National Convention.
    The game is now scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 4 -- the concluding night of the Republican convention -- and will be televised by NBC. :klatsch::klatsch::klatsch:League spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday that the NFL is talking with the network about changing the game's starting time to 7 p.m.
    The Super Bowl winner traditionally hosts the game. The Redskins' participation was confirmed by a person familiar with the NFL schedule who spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not announced it. The Washington Post earlier reported that the Redskins will be facing the Giants in the season opener.
    The highlight games of the NFL's first weekend will be announced Monday during league meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. The rest of the schedule will be announced later next month.

    Packers part of MNF doubleheader

    Palm Beach -- The NFL officially announced that the Packers would open the season at home against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night Sept. 8.

    Kickoff is at 6 p.m. local time.

    The game is part of a Monday night doubleheader that also features Denver at Oakland at 9:15 p.m. Both games are on ESPN.

    General manager Ted Thompson said he didn't know if that game would be the one in which the Packers retired quarterback Brett Favre's No. 4, although it certainly makes sense given the early kickoff and the national telecast.

    I'll get a chance to ask president Mark Murphy about that later.

    Said Thompson: "I think that's up to the Favre's and the organization. I think they'll probably put their heads together and figure out the best time."

    As expected, the league announced the season opener would be Washington at the New York Giants on Thursday, Sept. 4. It will be on NBC with kickoff set for 6 p.m. The game will have an early start because that is the night presidential candidate John McCain is expected to receive his nomination at the Republican Convention.

    On Sunday night Sept. 7, Chicago will travel to Indianapolis to open up the Colts' new stadium. NBC will televise with kickoff at 7:15 p.m.

    Houston submits preliminary Super Bowl bid for 2012

    HOUSTON -– The Houston Super Bowl Bid Committee has submitted its preliminary bid to the National Football League for 2012. The NFL confirmed receipt of Houston’s bid prior to today’s submission deadline.
    In accordance with the NFL’s bid procedures, cities are required to submit preliminary bids for review by NFL staff prior to final bids, which are due to NFL owners by May 9. In addition to Houston’s 163-page bid, the official documents also included the NFL-required bid questionnaire and eight three-ring binders which contained exhibits, contracts and letters of commitment.
    "Our bid committee and members of our Super Bowl Bid Working Committee did an outstanding job of preparing our preliminary bid," said John L. Nau, III, Chairman of the Houston Super Bowl Bid Committee. "We look forward to the NFL staff’s review and will bolster our final commitment to NFL owners at the appropriate time."

    Doch mittendrin steht einer, der den anderen meilenweit überlegen ist: Es ist Michael Vick, Ex-Quarterback der Atlanta Falcons.
    Die "New York Daily News" berichtet, dass sich Vick im Gefängnis von Leavenworth im US-Bundesstaat Kansas so fit hält.

    Das habe Falcons-Besitzer Arthur Blank berichtet, der Briefverkehr mit ihm hat. "Er hat mir ein paar Mal geschrieben, ich habe geantwortet, er hat den Kontakt aufrecht erhalten", erklärt Blank und spricht von Vicks neuem Team:

    "Er hält seine Form. Anscheinend gibt es dort ein Gefängnis-Team und er spielt für beide Seiten Quarterback."
    Hungerlohn beim Abwasch
    Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Knast-Quarterback wasche Vick Töpfe und Pfannen und bekommt dafür zwölf Cents pro Stunde.
    Sorgen um seine finanzielle Zukunft muss sich Vick, der im Dezember wegen illegaler Hundekämpfe zu 23 Monaten Gefängnis verurteilt wurde, deswegen aber nicht machen.
    Ein neuer Mensch?
    Ein Gericht hat im Februar entschieden, dass Vick 16,25 seiner 20 Millionen US-Dollar Unterschriftsbonus behalten kann. Die NFL hat dagegen Einspruch eingelegt.

    "Er bittet um nichts", sagt Blank. Vick schreibe nur über sein neues Leben im Gefängnis, die Lehren daraus und dass er als neuer Mensch aus dem Gefängnis kommen werde.
    "Ich versuche, ihn zu unterstützen und so verständnisvoll wie möglich zu sein", meint Blank. Ich habe ihm gesagt, dass ich tun werde, was immer ihm persönlich - nicht im Bezug auf die Falcons - hilft."
    Vick noch nicht abgeschrieben
    Blank hat Vick noch nicht abgeschrieben: "Ich sage nicht ja und nicht nein", sagte er dem "Atlanta Constitution-Journal". "Im Moment müssen wir uns so ausrichten, als würde er nicht mehr zurückkommen. Aber ich würde mich freuen, wenn er wieder in der NFL auflaufen würde."
    Davor muss Vick aber Grünes Licht von Commissioner Roger Goodell bekommen, der ihn unbefristet gesperrt hat. Der Ligaleiter plant, sich mit Vick zu treffen, wenn dieser aus der Strafanstalt entlassen wurde, und dann erst über eine weitere Strafe zu entscheiden.

    Frerotte's contract was finalized Tuesday. The 14-year veteran served as Daunte Culpepper's backup for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, and now he's in line to do the same for incumbent Tarvaris Jackson.
    The Vikings were looking for more polish at the position, and possibly someone to push Jackson for the job. Brooks Bollinger and <A href="http://www.nfl.com/players/kellyholcomb/profile?id=HOL006197" _extended="true">Kelly Holcomb</A _extended="true"> failed to produce when Jackson was injured, leaving coach Brad Childress without a reliable alternative when Jackson was struggling.
    Bollinger is still on the roster, but Holcomb was released.
    During Frerotte's last stint with Minnesota, he had a successful 2½ games as the starter when Culpepper hurt his back in September 2003.
    Frerotte has 82 NFL starts, but most of those came at the front end of his career with the Washington Redskins from 1994-98. He spent the last two seasons with St. Louis, starting three games for the Rams in 2007 and throwing seven touchdowns against 12 interceptions.
    Frerotte is more accomplished than Holcomb or Bollinger, but several backup quarterbacks were signed before him since the market opened in March. The Vikings were interested in trading for Houston's Sage Rosenfels, but the Texans weren't willing to part with him with starter Matt Schaub's health in question.
    Notes: The Vikings finalized their preseason schedule on Tuesday. They'll host Seattle on Friday, Aug. 8, and Pittsburgh on Saturday, Aug. 23.
